Will Relationship Counselling help?

Will relationship counselling help?

Let me guess you're thinking about relationship counselling but wondering will it actually help my relationship? That is a good question to ask yourself!

Firstly let’s define what exactly relationship counselling is.

Relationship counselling, also known as couples therapy, is a type of therapy that aims to help couples improve their relationship and resolve issues they may be facing. It typically involves meeting with a trained therapist or counsellor who can help couples identify challenges and increase awareness of behaviour that they are unable to resolve on their own.

With VenusSX, meetings can be conducted face-to-face, via video call or via online virtual meetings During these sessions, the therapist may use a variety of techniques to help the couple address specific issues, such as;

  • communication problems

  • trust issues

  • jealousy

  • Infidelity

  • sexual issues

  • conflicts over parenting or finances

The therapist may also help the couple identify patterns of behaviour that may be contributing to their problems and work with them to develop more effective coping strategies and communication skills.

It can be helpful for couples at any stage of their relationship, from those who are struggling with significant issues to those who simply want to strengthen their bond and build a more fulfilling partnership.

What makes up a healthy relationship?

Before I jump into whether counselling will help your relationship it’s important to define the key components that play an important role in maintaining a successful and healthy relationship.

These are;

  • Effective communication: allows partners to share their thoughts and feelings openly

  • mutual respect: ensures that each partner values and acknowledges the other's feelings and opinions

  • Trust & Commitment: help build a strong foundation for the relationship

  • Shared values and goals: help ensure that partners are working towards a common purpose

When one of these components breaks down a relationship then has a higher chance of breaking down. If you are unable to solve this issue on your own it will become essential for you to seek outside help.

Relationship counselling can help couples address and improve these key areas. For example, it can teach couples effective communication skills, such as active listening and expressing needs and emotions clearly.

They can help partners understand the importance of mutual respect and how to demonstrate it in their interactions with each other, and also help couples rebuild trust and commitment after a breach of trust, such as infidelity. By working with both partners to identify the underlying issues that led to the breach of trust, a counsellor can help develop a plan for rebuilding trust and strengthening their commitment to each other.

Sarah and Jack’s Real Life Relationship

Jack and Sarah had been married for 10 years, but over the past few years, their relationship had been going downhill. They were constantly arguing, and they seemed to have lost the emotional connection they once had. Jack felt that Sarah was too critical of him, and Sarah felt that Jack didn't listen to her. They were both unhappy and were considering divorce.

They decided to try relationship counselling and they found a therapist who specialises in couples therapy. During the first few sessions, the therapist helped them identify the underlying issues that were causing their problems. Jack realised that he had been withdrawing from Sarah because he felt that she was always criticising him. Sarah realised that she was critical of Jack because she felt like he wasn't listening to her.

The therapist helped them learn how to communicate more effectively and how to express their emotions to each other in a healthy way. They learned how to listen to each other and how to validate each other's feelings more.

Over the course of several months, Jack and Sarah's relationship improved significantly. They were able to communicate more effectively and they were able to resolve conflicts without getting into arguments. They felt closer to each other than they had in years, and they both felt much happier in their relationship.

Are there other factors that can impact the effectiveness of relationship counselling?

Whilst studies have shown that relationship counselling can be effective they have also shown that there are other factors that can impact this effectiveness. This includes, the specific approach used, the qualifications and experience of the therapist, the severity of the problems, and the willingness of the couple to actively engage in the therapy.

So, how can you guarantee the therapy will be effective?

Look out for an effective relationship coach!

This includes looking for someone with;

  1. Qualifications and Experience: It's important to look for a coach who has appropriate qualifications and experience in relationship coaching. Check their credentials, certifications, and training to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to help you.

  2. Communication Skills: A good relationship coach should have excellent communication skills. They should be able to actively listen to you and understand your concerns, as well as effectively convey information and advice to you.

  3. Empathy and Compassion: A coach who is empathetic and compassionate can be particularly helpful in relationship coaching. They should be able to understand your feelings and situation, and offer emotional support as well as practical advice.

  4. Compatibility: It's important to choose a coach who you feel comfortable with and can trust. Look for a coach who has a coaching style that suits your personality and needs, and who you feel you can build a good rapport with.

  5. Feedback and Reviews: Check for reviews and feedback from previous clients to get a sense of their experience working with the coach. This can help you get an idea of the coach's effectiveness and whether they are a good fit for you.

  6. Confidentiality: A good coach should maintain a high level of confidentiality and respect your privacy. Ensure that the coach you choose has a clear policy on confidentiality and takes steps to protect your personal information.
