Can Life Coaching Help Depression?

As a registered counsellor, I have seen people go through emotional journeys from deep depression to bliss and joy. Whilst it is normal to feel down from time to time and it is a part of being human, I have also seen these down feelings turn into something more. I have seen how it can lead to an ongoing feeling of hopelessness or inadequacy, which could be labeled depression.

From a non-medical shamanic approach to holistic health, depression is a culmination of many factors. It starts with the inability to deal with our fear of the unknown and if we can’t communicate our anger, we turn inward (anxiety/hysteria) and we close our third eye and this means we lose our vision, and lose connection to our intuition.

Can Life Coaching Help Depression?

With the support of life coaching, I have seen people turn their lives around through looking at depression from this viewpoint, not from a pharmaceutical point of view.

There are coaches with a background in psychology or psychotherapy and there are some who are specifically trained to support individuals with depression, called depression coaches.

Life coaching can be a stand alone treatment, or complement other treatments, by providing support and guidance for individuals who are working to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching generally is a practice that helps individuals identify and achieve their personal and professional goals. It involves working with a trained professional who provides guidance and support to help clients clarify their vision for their life, develop a plan of action, and overcome any obstacles that may be preventing them from achieving their goals.

Life coaching is not therapy, although it can involve some therapeutic elements. Unlike therapy, which is typically focused on addressing emotional and psychological issues, life coaching is primarily concerned with helping individuals remember their dreams, reach their goals and make positive changes in their lives.

6 Different Styles of Coaching

There are many different types of coaching, each with its own focus and approach. Here are some of the most common types of coaching:

  1. Life Coaching: focuses on helping individuals achieve their personal goals and aspirations. Life coaches work with clients to identify their values, priorities, dreams and passions, and help them develop a plan of action to create the life they want.

  2. Intimacy Coaching: designed to help individuals or couples improve their communication skills, have a more pleasurable relationship to their bodies, and learn how to ask for what we need. Intimacy coaches work with clients to identify areas of low self-worth, shame and blame, to develop more self-awareness and provide support and guidance along the way.

  3. Career Coaching: focused on helping individuals identify their career goals, develop a job search strategy, and navigate the job market. Career coaches can help with everything from writing resumes and cover letters to preparing for job interviews and negotiating salary offers.

  4. Health Coaching: focused on helping individuals improve their physical and mental health. Health coaches work with clients to develop healthy habits, set fitness goals, manage chronic conditions, and reduce stress.

  5. Relationship Coaching: designed to help individuals improve their personal relationships, including romantic partnerships, family relationships, and friendships. Relationship coaches help clients identify patterns of behavior that may be hindering their relationships, develop effective communication skills, and build stronger connections with others.

  6. Financial Coaching: focused on helping individuals manage their finances more effectively. Financial coaches work with clients to develop a budget, reduce debt, save for retirement, and achieve other financial goals.

What is the difference between coaching and counselling ?

Coaching is focused on helping individuals achieve their goals, while counselling is focused on helping individuals address emotional and psychological issues. Coaching is typically future-oriented, with an emphasis on creating a plan of action to achieve desired outcomes. Counselling, on the other hand, is often more focused on exploring past experiences and emotions to help clients understand and manage their feelings.

Coaches and counsellors also use different techniques and tools. Coaches may use goal-setting, visualisation, and other tools to help clients achieve their objectives. Counsellors may use techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and talk therapy to help clients identify and address underlying emotional and psychological issues.

How can Life Coaching for Depression help?

By attending regular coaching sessions the client has someone to keep them accountable, which can be helpful for people who are struggling with depression-related apathy or lack of energy.

Since depression can make it hard to see progress and celebrate successes, coaching can help by providing a space of positive feedback and reinforcement, highlighting growth and providing encouragement to continue working towards healing.
